AlaskaJoe's Tips

Resize The Taskbar Buttons

If you have ever had many applications open at the same time, then you know how crowded the taskbar can get. Many a new Windows user has assumed that like most other windows, you can resize one of the buttons to make it easier to use.

Unfortunately the buttons on the taskbar are automatically sized to fit. You cannot click and drag a button on the taskbar to make it bigger. You can, however, expand the taskbar by clicking and dragging the taskbar up. This gives Windows more space, and makes your taskbar buttons bigger.

Editing The General Tab

In the general tab of most menus, Microsoft will allow computer manufacturers to place their own logo. You can, therefore, change this logo to be anything you want. Create a bitmap image of 210 x 120 of any image you wish and save/replace the file called OEMLOGO.BMP located in the Windows\System folder or Windows\System32 folder depending upon your version of Windows. Now, when you bring up menus, for example the System Properties, your image will be displayed in the general tab.

Trouble With Update!

If you are having difficulty with the Microsoft Update download, you can go to the link below this tip and look for information on the latest update quirks and how to solve them. For example, one quirk is in Windows Me: the installation would be almost complete, then not finish. It could even cause your system to hang. Depending upon the update, Microsoft offers a variety of solutions to eliminate these issues.

Scheduling Conflicts

If you have your Scheduler scheduled to perform a virus scan, defrag, or other tasks, be sure that they are mutually exclusive. By this I mean that if you have the defragmenter and virus scan scheduled at the same time, they will conflict and disallow one or the other to perform properly. Also, be sure to turn off your screen saver when defragmenting.
