A Grandchild’s Guide to Using Grandpa’s Computer

http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/elz1/clocktower/DrSeuss.html

Today's Guests are Adam Schran from http://www.ascentive.com

Adam Schran is president and CEO of Ascentive LLC, a Philadelphia-based software company that designs and markets a range of easy to download software products that enhances computer users’ Internet and PC experience.

In July 1999, Mr. Schran, along with his 11-year-old brother Andrew, developed software applications that could tweak a computer’s settings to maximize performance.  Mr. Schran founded Ascentive to market their first application, WinRocket, online.  From that day on, the company made money without a dime from venture capital financing.

Today Mr. Schran is CEO and his brother Andrew, now 14-years-old, is the Chief Technology Officer.  Ascentive’s website, www.ascentive.com, is one of the most trafficked Web sites in the world with over 4 million visitors a month and over 10,000 affiliate partners, including some of the world’s largest software companies, such as McAfee.   Since WinRocket, Ascentive now has more products to offer like WebRocket, ActiveTime, ActivePrivacy, and BeAware with ChatWatch.

Disk Cleanup Error

If you have compressed one of your hard drives in Windows Me, you may get an erroneous error within Disk Cleanup stating that you are below a certain threshold. Yet, when running the cleanup, no files are selected and no files are cleaned. Here's the solution to this false message. Go to System Tools and select Disk Cleanup. Select the Host drive in the dropdown box and select OK. Now click the Settings tab and clear the checkbox for the Disk Cleanup auto run. Click OK, and then click Yes.

Using DCC Between Windows 98/Me And NT2000

If you are trying to connect a Windows 98/Me machine to a Windows NT machine, and are having difficulty, this is because you must be running Remote Access Server (RAS) on the NT machine and Direct Cable Connection (DCC) on Windows 98/Me. Also, you cannot use a parallel connection between the two, only a serial connection. The Windows NT computer needs to use a Null modem 19200 driver. Windows NT won't let a DCC connection go past 19200.

Limit Windows' Memory

Windows Me will attempt to use as much memory as your system will allow, up to a point. However, on some processors, there is a point where the increase in memory returns a diminishing increase in performance. At some point, increases in memory can actually begin to decrease performance. On many machines, Windows Me, tops out performance at about 64MB.

Windows Button

If you're like me, many times within Windows Me I accidentally press a keyboard combination and a screen pops up that I did not intend to initiate. The Windows button on many keyboards has many combinations that are easily started. You can disable this combination from within Tweak UI. Start Tweak UI (a Microsoft downloaded utility) and select the IE tab. One of the options is "Enable Windows+X hotkeys." Deselect this option and restart. Now the Windows button will no longer be an instigator of hotkey accidents.
