Today's Guests are:
Paul Chato from G & A Electramedia and our own Joannebe and Rob

Rob watched all the goings-on during the Geek Meet 2002 show in Charlotte.  He showed so much interest, that we have scheduled a conference call between him and our favorite Joannebe.  The picture below shows

Paul Chato from G & A Electramedia
Best Security Award for Access Armor v 1.0 at Las Vegas Comdex 2001
President, G+A Electramedia

It's hard enough to succeed in one career. Paul has succeeded in four different pursuits. After graduating from Ryerson's Radio Television Arts he started Chato Art Ink, one of Toronto's most successful independent design firms. He stopped designing to take up comedy helping to form the now legendary Frantics Comedy Troupe, and will be forever remembered as Mr. Canoehead, “Canada’s aluminum-headed crime fighter.” Paul left the Frantics and joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation rising up to the position of Head of TV Comedy where his greatest service was giving work to Mark McKinney and Kevin MacDonald (of Kids in the Hall fame) when they were near starvation. Upon seeing a multimedia presentation on a Macintosh in 1989, he left the CBC to find a way to merge his entertainment skills with the incredible potential of computer technology. Paul started Electramedia and in the intervening years created the hugely successful CD-ROM game Jewels of the Oracle, hundreds of corporate presentations, videos and Internet sites.

Now called G+A Electramedia, Paul and company are concentrating their efforts on the Internet and Web-based content management and security. Most recently, AccessArmor™ won Best of Show at Comdex 2001 for best security product. Clients include Mercedes-Benz Canada, JDS Uniphase and DaimlerChrysler AG. Paul is married to Ramona Chato and has two children, Hayley 9 and Ellis 3.

AlaskaJoe's Tips

Zoom!

If you are using the "Thumbnail" view option within Windows Me Explorer, you can use the small interface box at the lower portion of the screen to perform a preview, zoom, print, or rotate on the image without actually opening the image.

Beginner's Tip: Registered Files

Registered files are files that have extensions that automatically are opened by a specific program. For example, .DOC files are usually registered to either WordPad or Word. So when you double-click on a file that has .DOC, Windows, from within Word, automatically starts one of these programs.

The nasty side to this feature is files can be automatically started, such as the .EXE or .VBS that people created as viruses. So when you open an attachment that is actually a virus, Windows will automatically run the program, infecting your computer.

Beginner's Tips: Registered Files Part II

Yesterday we talked about Registered Files. Today's tip is a practical application of that trick. If you have a file on your computer that you do not want someone to accidentally click and run; rename the file with the extension .OLD. This .OLD extension is not recognized by Windows and will not automatically run.

Beginner's Tip: Deletion Rule Of Thumb

Whenever you delete a file, always assume that you will NOT be able to restore it. So if there is a remote chance you will need the file, instead of deleting it, archive it or move it to a floppy or tape drive.

Slowdown Issue

Be careful when using complex pictures as your Windows background. Windows must constantly recalculate the colors, images, and locations each time you move a mouse, double click, or move a window. This can greatly slow down your computer. You might want to use a less detailed picture, or when doing heavy duty processing, temporarily have no background at all.
