AlaskaJoe's Tips

Firewall Problem

If you have two computers that you are trying to connect with a LAN or Direct Cable Connection and are having difficulty, check to see if either of the computers has a personal firewall. If so, check the software manual to see how to allow a specific IP address to have unlimited access. Your firewall will prevent connections by unknown computers and may be misinterpreting the LAN or DCC connection as an attempted hostile attack and block it.

Techno Babble: Bandwidth

Bandwidth is a term used to describe how much information your computer (usually via modem) can receive in a predetermined amount of time (per second). The most common measure is Bps (bits per second). You will also see Kbps and Mbps that stand for Kilo (thousand) bits per second, and Mega (Million) bits per second.

The larger the bps number, the more information you can receive per second, therefore, the higher the bandwidth.
This does NOT mean that you will always get faster download time. Download time also depends upon how fast the computer on the other end is sending information.

Business Tip: Lunchtime Shut Down

When you are performing your daily work, you are probably opening and closing applications on a frequent basis. By doing this, Windows actually retains small fragments of applications that are not removed until shutdown.

To keep your system running at peak capacity, before lunch, log off (if on a LAN), shut your computer down and turn it off. Wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on. When it is up, run your virus check (if not done automatically) then lock your PC and go to lunch. When you return, you will have a clean slate and a virus-free (hopefully) machine.

Business Tip: Information Overload

In today's fast-paced business world, there is literally no limit to the amount of information that you can access. Web pages are loaded with data, employees are gathering information, and documents are abundant!

To help sort through all of this information, de-clutter! If you have icons on your desktop that you don't need, delete them. If you think you might need documents, but are not sure, create a series of archive folders on your LAN and hold them there. A good rule of thumb is to archive, and forget. If you need it later, you know where to go get it. There is no need to have old documents in frequently used folders. Archive!

Background Problems

If you have a favorite photo that you have scanned into your PC and have tried with no success to create a Desktop Background, then your Scanner software may be defaulting the file type to an incompatible format.

Scan in the picture, then instead of just saving the file, perform a "Save As" and change the format to BMP. Now, you can use this file type as your background. Check your Scanner's manual on specifics of changing the file type.
