AlaskaJoe's Tips

Defeat music cd copy protection with felt-tip pen. Simply cover up the outer track to disable the protection, allowing a disc to be played as normal in a PC or Mac. On copy protected discs this outer track is corrupted, which prevents copying, or even playback, by PCs but is ignored by regular CD players.

Business Tip: Important LAN Structures

In business, not only are the documents you produce important, so is the LAN structure that you have built to house these documents. Losing the structure is almost as bad as losing the documents. Worse would be to lose both.

To reduce this risk, back up not only the documents, but also the entire "Tree". A tree is the term used to describe a folder and all of its sub folders. A useful way to do this is simply to click and drag the highest-level folder to a folder somewhere else on the LAN on a weekly or monthly basis. This way, you can maintain accurate backups. It is also a good idea to document how your LAN structure should look, and establish naming conventions.

Beginner's Tip: Min And Max Functions

I once watched a neophyte Windows user using the small arrows to click and drag the window edges to the edge of
the screen. When I inquired, she stated she wanted the window to be as big as possible. There is an easier way.

At the top right of the window, there are three buttons.  The one on the left is the Minimize button. This button
will shrink the window down and off the screen. The application is still running, but it is invisible. The middle button is the Maximize/Restore button. This button will make the window as large as it will get, or if already maximized, will put the window into 'restore' mode, which allows you to shrink or increase the window size. The button on the right is the Close button. This will close the window and the application. Always save your work before using this button. You can also double click the blue bar across the top of the window.

Calculator Copy

When you use the Windows Calculator application, you cannot cut and paste the value in the calculator. You must use
the Edit menu, and select Copy. Now you can paste the value into another document.

Copyright Violations

When writing a report for school, if you choose to use content found on a web page, remember to always give credit where credit is due. Copying information from a web page, then inserting it into your paper is plagiarism, and many schools have very stiff penalties associated with this activity. Always properly cite the web page in your paper.
