Guest speaker:

CanadianTom

The website is www.softkits.com I sometimes use www.canadiantom.com but it goes down frequently because the provider is bad. However, the softkits one is very reliable,. I try to provide people with privacy and security tips usually by showing them how hackers and crackers do what they do. Although i started out hacking and cracking years ago, as i approach middle age, I try to explain how insecure we are on the net and how to disable or neutralize spyware and tracking files. I guess you can fill in the blanks. My background is engineering technology and have spent most of my life with communication companies like Philips and Uniden as a regional communication system consultant to businesses. I have had my amateur radio license for more than twenty five years and attended DeVry institute in Toronto back in the late eighties taking engineering technology.

Thank you  CanadianTom

The Hunger Site

At first glance, The Hunger Site might look like one of those sick Internet jokes that you see. Something along the lines of sending email to fictitious ill children. But this isn't the case -- The Hunger Site is for real. Every time you click the "Donate Free Food" button, the site sponsors donate money to supply one cup of food to a hungry person. This is for real -- the hungry victims really do get the food. As you might imagine, many people would click the button hundreds of times a day to help supply more food. Please avoid this temptation -- each person (URL) is allowed only one click per day. More clicks don't count. Click here to access The Hunger Site.

I don’t recommended web sites all of the time unless I think they will help when working on computers.

But this one is funny it’s called "Bozo Criminal of the day". Every day it lists Bozo Criminals that do dumb things.

It's worth a read.

Pee is for poster in Pet Awards advertising

AN advertising campaign that uses posters scented with canine urine to attract dogs and in their owners is set to hit the streets tomorrow.

TV channel Animal Planet is using the innovative ploy, claimed to be a world first, to publicize its Pet Awards project. The scheme aims to recognize heroic pets and pet-lovers and categories include smartest, bravest and wackiest pets.

The posters will be sited on lamp-posts at dog’s-eye level and a second advert will be positioned at owners’ height giving information on how to nominate their animals for the awards. The campaign will be run in London, Birmingham and Glasgow.

Emma Read, commissioning editor from Animal Planet, said: "Unlike previous advertising executions, this isn’t about getting bums on seats or hands in pockets, it’s about getting one paw off the ground."

AlaskaJoe's Tips

Mac OS Tip

Acrobat Update
(General) Adobe has updated their free Acrobat Reader software to version 5.0. Since it's free, it might be a good idea to download and install the update. X users will enjoy the fact that Acrobat Reader has now been Carbonized to run in X and 9. Other small improvements await, too.
You can download the new version of Acrobat by clicking here!

Mobile Computing Tip

A Reasonably Priced Internet Cafe
Internet cafes are great for keeping up with e-mail when traveling, but some of them can be downright expensive. A chain of Internet cafes in Europe that has received rave reviews for pricing and service is EasyEverything. It has 15 locations in Europe (and one in New York City). For more information, point your browser to http://www.easyeverything.com.

Palm OS Tip

Call Home
Before leaving on a long business trip, make sure your remote access to your home PC is working correctly by running next door (or down the hall) and calling in with your Palm. This will save you the frustration of finding out your connection is awry while standing in front of that important client in Strasbourg!

Outlook 2000 Tip

Save Hard Drive Space!
You can save a lot of hard disc space by having Outlook empty the Deleted Items folder automatically each time you close Outlook. Simply follow these steps:
* Select Tools>>Options>>Other.
* In the General section, click the checkbox for Empty the Deleted Items Folder Upon Exiting.
If you would like to be reminded every time items in the Deleted folder and its subfolders will be permanently deleted, you can also click the Advance Options button. But here's caveat: it's annoying.

Linux Tip

Spelling Made Easy: 'ispell'
In my last tip, I showed you how to check your spelling with the simple command line program called, appropriately enough, "spell." A more interactive version of that program, called "ispell," allows you to check your spelling, and correct it, and gives you suggestions for the word you meant to type. Ispell works on several file formats including text, TeX/LaTeX and troff/nroff.

There are many command line variables for the ispell program. For a complete explanation, check the manual for ispell with the command

$man ispell

in a terminal window.

If you want to get the latest version or perhaps update your dictionary, go to the Ispell homepage by clicking here!

Download of the Day

System Monitor
Need a good system monitor program? If so, you need to check out EF Software. They have a shareware program that will monitor activities not only on your computer, but other computers on a network as well, provided they use NT or Windows 2000. Give it a try and, if you like it, you can register for $10. We like this one.

You can download EF System Monitor by clicking here!

Microsoft Windows Tip

Advanced Tip: The Taskbar, Part 2
If you'd like a quick and easy way to get to your favorite folder, you can add a toolbar onto your taskbar. In the taskbar, right-click and select Toolbars; you will see these options: Links, Address, Desktop, and Quick Launch. Each one of these can be added to your toolbar. You can then resize the toolbar and have a large 'Superbar' for all kinds of control.

To add a toolbar, right-click again on the taskbar. Select Toolbars again, then click New Toolbar. A small window will appear. Browse through the folders until you find what you want, then click on your selection and click OK. Now, you will have the ability to go to that folder/program just by clicking it on the toolbar.
