The Hunger Site
At first glance, The Hunger Site might look like one of those sick Internet jokes that you see. Something along the lines of sending email to fictitious ill children. But this isn't the case -- The Hunger Site is for real. Every time you click the "Donate Free Food" button, the site sponsors donate money to supply one cup of food to a hungry person. This is for real -- the hungry victims really do get the food. As you might imagine, many people would click the button hundreds of times a day to help supply more food. Please avoid this temptation -- each person (URL) is allowed only one click per day. More clicks don't count. Click here to access The Hunger Site.

AlaskaJoe's Tips
Beginner Tip: Safe Mode
Safe Mode is a special startup mode in which Windows will boot whenever it encounters a problem that it cannot solve itself. Safe Mode boots the system with the bare bone essentials that are needed to make your computer work, but really does nothing more than troubleshoot. It also won't load third-party drivers, since they may be the problem's source.
Safe Mode also does not load anything from the Registry. This is helpful if a program (or perhaps YOU!) changed something that caused Windows to have problems. (Note, too, that the video mode looks really odd. Why? Because only the most basic driver is loaded that supports a 640X480 and 16-color mode.)

EMAZING
Prevent Timeouts
If you're using a dial-up connection that sometimes terminates while you're in the kitchen getting a cup of coffee, you need some way to make sure your connection stays alive. One way to keep a connection alive is to use a program that constantly pings some address. One program that we like is called KeepMeConnected from Firework Software.
KeepMeConnected is freeware and you can get a copy at the handily link below.

Beginner Tip: The Registry
The registry is a series of very technical controls deep inside the heart of your Windows operating system. There are literally thousands of different commands, classes, and keys that can all be modified. If you're a novice Windows user (or even somewhat experienced), unless you know exactly what you're doing -- and know how to recover from any damage that you may cause -- the best advice I can give is this: Leave the registry alone! If you accidentally change your registry in some way that is detrimental, you can potentially crash your entire system and/or lose data.
If you're really interested in learning more about your registry, there are several detailed books on the topic. If you're just the casual Windows user, then this is not a topic that is worth your time.

Dealing With GoHip.Com
If you have ended up with GoHip.com on your computer somehow, you know that it's harder to get rid of than a bad reputation. We tried to help someone exorcize GoHip from a computer. We eliminated all references to it in Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then we ran RegEdit and deleted all references that we could find in the Registry. We restarted the computer and GoHip came back.
There is a way to get rid of GoHip, and GoHip itself provides the means. Just go to the link below and follow the instructions.

More Fonts?
(98, Me) When you installed Windows, did you use the Typical Install? If so, then you're missing a boatload of fonts. If you want to get them, then open an MSDOS window, insert your Windows CD and go to the root directory. Type the following commands based on the version of Windows you use (substitute your CDROM drive letter for the letter E):
For Windows Me: Extract /A /L C:\Coolfont E:\Win9X\Base2.Cab *.ttf
For Windows 98: Extract /A /L C:\Coolfont E:\Win98\Base4.Cab *.ttf
The only difference between the two is the 9X vs. the 98.
