This weeks guest are  Robert Woodhead CEO of AnimEigo and Riley Hiett will be starting a new series on Computers and the Handicapped

Back in the early days of the PC era (1981), Robert Woodhead was one of the creators of the Wizardry series of computer-role-playing games. He also created the Macintosh anti-virus tool "Virex." He is CEO of AnimEigo http://www.animeigo.com/, one of the first Japanese Animation companies. He says, "Recently, there have been unconfirmed reports that I've been subtitling cool Samurai Films http://www.animeigo.com/samurai/ as well."

He lives in Wilmington, NC, with his wife and two toy-loving children. He has a semi-live feed from his office (it only updates when you replot the page). He is currently transitioning to working more out of his home, so right now you'll rarely see him on the web cam. Eventually he'll install the cam at the house. If all you see is an empty chair and a messy desk, then click here to see what he looks like http://selfpromotion.com/img/madrobert.jpg after he logs in and finds 500 emails waiting for him.

AlaskaJoe's Tips

Quick Select

In Explorer, if you press Ctrl and the 'A' button at the same time, it will automatically select all files and folders. This can be helpful to move a large volume of data from one location to another without having to select each file/folder individually. If you want to select almost everything except a few files, follow the above procedure, and while still holding the Ctrl button, click on the files that you do NOT want, and they will be unselected.

Shut Down woes

Due to a technical error, yesterday's newsletters in the html format did not deliver correctly. We apologize for this inconvenience. You can check yesterday's tips in the Emazing Archives. To visit the Archives, click the link at the bottom of today's tip.

Windows is a great Operating System until it starts to act poorly. Then it is infuriatingly obstinate. One such occurrence is during Shutdown. Sometimes, Windows simply hangs, and will not do anything and you must turn off the computer.

Next time Windows is having trouble shutting down, follow these steps:

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task screen. This is the menu that displays all of the programs currently running. Sometimes, one or more may come up with a message saying that it is not responding. End these tasks by pressing the "End Task" button. One by one, keep ending tasks until the only one left is Explorer. Now try your Shut Down.

Keep tabs on the offending tasks and check the Microsoft web site for any known problems. Also make sure your Windows has been recently updated and you have run Scan Disk. Also using a third party Windows "check-up" tool is helpful in isolating problems.

Windows 98 known bug

Windows 98 has a known bug that causes it to report incorrect disk space. You may know that you have plenty of disk space, but Windows is reporting a mere fraction of that amount. To correct this problem, simply run Scandisk.

Boot me up!

Windows 98 has a parameter in the MSDOS.SYS file that causes the boot cycle to wait for a few moments before continuing. You can alter this parameter by following these instructions:

Make a copy of your MSDOS.SYS file to anything you want, just remember what it was. Add the parameter BOOTDELAY=0 to the OPTIONS section. Do NOT delete anything. If for some reason, the boot process fails, rename your copied file back to MSDOS.SYS.

Control Key for copying

To copy a file without having to perform any additional work, press and hold the CTRL key while dragging the object to its destination. Windows will automatically assume that you want to copy and do so without any further work.
