This weeks guest is Duncan Long a Graphic designer  (http://duncanlong.com)

Duncan Long wears three hats with his work. He makes most of his money writing. He enjoys most of all his work creating pictures. He was trained as a composer (classical/electronic/synthesizer). He says that means, "I compose music that almost no one listens to )." He uses much the same techniques for all three fields as far as generating ideas along with the balance, creation, and compositional layout of writing/music/or art. He says, "This latter is something that is a bit hard to explain but which has enabled me to generate a whole lot of output over the years."

AlaskaJoe's Tips

Search and Destroy

You can delete all files with a certain parameter easily using the Search/Find tool. For example, if you want to delete all files that have to do with your last project, and then use the Find/Search tool to find all documents that have certain keywords (such as 'Wellington Project'). After finding the documents, verify that they can be deleted and simply delete them from here. This saves having to hunt manually for files for deletion.

HyperTerminal Icon removal

In Windows 98, if you want to remove the little icon that blinks from your task bar when the HyperTerminal is running, then follow these steps:

You will need to repeat these steps for each HyperTerminal connection.

Point and Click!

In Windows Me, you have the capability of what is called "Web view" that gives you the ability to choose icons by clicking on them like you would click on a link within Internet Explorer. The mouse pointer will temporarily change to a hand with the index finger extended, and the icon's name will become underlined.

To use this option, open the Control Panel and go to 'Folder Options'. At the bottom is an option that is called "Click Items as Follows". The default is set to double click. You can now change it to single click. Within the single click choice you have two options. This option allows you to choose whether you want the icons underlined all the time or just when you click on them.

When you are done click 'Apply'. You can change these settings whenever you wish.

System Restore

In Windows Me, System Restore is a method that can be used to put the Windows system back to the way it was at any given point that is chosen. The System restore does not change data files such as emails and documents, but will change the registry and installed components to their original configuration from the point of the last restore save.

To create a checkpoint, Click 'Start' then go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and System Restore.

Now, select 'Create a Restore Point' and click next.

Type in any name for this checkpoint and click Next, then OK.

System Restore

To restore the Window Me system to a previous checkpoint created within System Restore, click the 'Start' button then go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and System Restore.

Select the 'Restore My Computer to an earlier time' and select the name of the checkpoint you created.

Windows should now be restored to its last checkpoint.
