AlaskaJoe's Tips

Poor Graphics

Many of Windows applications, such as Word, will allow you to place a screen image into a document. This can be very useful when creating documents that need to show a particular screen, or instructions.

One problem that you may encounter is that sometimes the inserted screen print (or other images) may appear chopped or incomplete. This is because the Windows screen setting has High-Color and Windows is simply unable to properly paint the image.

To correct this, temporarily take your Windows settings down to 256 colors until you have completed your document. In either case, when you print the document, it will look just fine, despite looking poorly on the monitor.

Control Panel Trick

If you right click on 'Control Panel' within the Start menu, you have the option to jump to Explorer.

Animated Cursors

Do you use one of those cute little animated cursors when you are using your PC. They are fun to watch and come in a variety of images. This amusement comes at a rather large cost. The computing power needed to keep that little image going can be quite extensive. If you are having a problem with your computer being slow, and you use an animated cursor, then try turning off the cursor and see if the situation improves.

My Computer Locks Up When In Suspend!

This is a little known bug in Windows 98 that causes the computer to hang when it is in suspend. This is caused, believe it or not, when a drive letter is lower case in the SYSTEM.INI. You can fix this by doing the following:

- Select Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open: box, then press OK

- Select the System.ini tab

- Click the + sign next to the (386Enh) section to expand it

- Select the line PagingFile= and click Edit

- Change the lowercase drive letter to uppercase

- Click Apply and OK

- When prompted, restart your computer

Tab Tip

If you are filling out a form on-line, you do not need to point and click on each box in order to fill them out. You can use the 'tab' key to move between boxes. You can also use this same technique with most Windows 98 dialogue boxes.

Clicking Speed

In Windows 98, you can change the time intervals between clicks on your mouse from a very quick to a much slower double-click. Go to the Control Panel and find the mouse icon and double click. On the first screen, there is a slide bar, with which you can control your double click speed. Slide the bar to the left for slower, and to the right for faster. Now, test it on the Jack-in-the-box and see if you like it.

The steps above are almost identical in Windows Me with some minor variations.
