The Hunger Site

At first glance, The Hunger Site might look like one of those sick Internet jokes that you see. Something along the lines of sending email to fictitious ill children. But this isn't the case -- The Hunger Site is for real. Every time you click the "Donate Free Food" button, the site sponsors donate money to supply one cup of food to a hungry person. This is for real -- the hungry victims really do get the food. As you might imagine, many people would click the button hundreds of times a day to help supply more food. Please avoid this temptation -- each person (URL) is allowed only one click per day. More clicks don't count. Click here to access The Hunger Site.

AlaskaJoe's Tips

Toolbar

Most every application within Windows comes with some kind of toolbar. The toolbars allow GUI (pronounced gooey) control to perform an action so that you don't need to  navigate through menus. GUI stands for Graphic User Interface, which is a fancy way of saying that you can see pictures and click on things. You can usually control the number of visible toolbars by clicking the View option, selecting the Toolbar, and then adding/removing toolbars to save space or to add easily controlled GUI functionality.

Why have this GUI interface? If you've worked on a Mainframe or with DOS, then you'll remember that the only way to perform work on those systems was to type long commands. But the GUI interface allows a single-button click to activate tons of behind-the-scenes code to perform that same function--it's much easier, trust me!

Outlook2000
Keep A Journal

The Outlook journal feature allows you to type in notes from a phone call with a customer or colleague, keep track of what files you work in and use the Timer feature to record how long you perform a task (a great tool if you're a lawyer and are billing customers by the hour!).

Beginner Tip: Double-Click Alternative

If you have trouble using the double-click mouse function to open a program, then an alternative is to right-click the file/folder/drive and select Open. This method gives you the same result.

Blocking Email Messages

Do you consistently get email messages from some commercial site that you really don't want? Have you asked them to take you off the list with no response so far? If you're using Outlook Express 5.x or 6, you can block these messages and never have to see them again. Just click on the offending message and choose Message|Block Sender. You'll get a dialog box asking if you want to remove all the current messages from this sender. Click Yes. You'll get another dialog box informing you that the deed has been done. Click OK and you're done.
