Windows Shutdown Fix
Microsoft has posted a fix that you can download and install on your 98 system. This fix deals with a known problem in Windows 98 that prevents Shutdown from behaving properly. You can also get this fix by updating Windows 98 from Microsoft's update web site for Windows 98.

Virtual Memory
One of those techno-babble terms that float around is "virtual memory". Don't let the technical nature of the word fool you, it's literally nothing more than storing what Windows cannot fit into the RAM (Random Access Memory) memory, onto a temporary area of your hard disk. Virtual memory is also called the "Swap" file.
The virtual memory settings in Windows Me and 98 can be found by going to the Control Panel and selecting the System Icon. Click the Performance Tab, and click the Virtual Memory button. Exercise caution when changing these settings!

Fragmented Virtual Memory
The Windows Swap File acts as "extra memory" for your computer when regular RAM (Random Access Memory) is used up. Sometimes, this virtual memory can get fragmented on your hard drive, causing slowdowns!
To remedy this there are three solutions.
1) Copy the swap file to an empty disk and de-fragment the file. Then copy it back. This can be dangerous and somewhat risky. I do not recommend this!
2) Delete the swap file and let Windows reallocate it. I do not recommend this, either! This might cause your system to freeze up or not to boot.
3) Buy a third party product and let it defrag the swap file. This is probably the best solution because it allows a de-fragmentation of the swap file with minimal danger to your system.

Version Control
Windows 95 and 98 have a known problem with something called Version Control that newer versions of Windows attempt to address better. Version Control means that you want to make sure that Windows is not going to allow the installation of files that are actually older than the files that currently exist on your PC. To assist in controlling this, run the Version Conflict Manager or the System File Checker (available from the Tools menu on the System Information utility in control panel). This list identifies files that may be newer than the ones Windows 98 installed.
