AlaskaJoe's Tips
Macworld Mac Tip: Apple System Profiler Clippings
Inventory all hardware and software with the Apple System Profiler.

Under the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen is a handy application called the Apple System Profiler.

This program goes through your system and inventories all your hardware and software. It's a great way to check out exactly what you're running, freeze your system in time, or send details to a confused tech support person. You can turn any element of this handy utility into a clipping file.

Just place your cursor over some element -- memory overview, for example -- and click and drag that element from the Apple System Profiler window to the desktop. You can cut and paste this information into an email message or text file.

Delete Mac and PC Files Forever

Q: I saw your show where you told us about the BC Wipe to permanently erase data. I went to download it and found it is only for Windows. Is there something similar for Macintosh computers?

-- phone call from Eileen in Plantation, Florida

A: Yes! Download a free copy of Burn from the ZDNet Software Library. (PC users, grab a copy of BC Wipe if you haven't already.)

Dragging a file to the Trash or Recycle Bin does not actually delete it all the way. Your computer will mark it "deleted" and might later overwrite it with other data, but the file is not gone.

Like BC Wipe on the PC, Burn will get rid of your Mac files for good. Instead of dragging a document to the trash, you can drag it over the Burn icon. Burn then overwrites the file with random numbers. You can also delete aliases without affecting the original file.

Macworld Mac Tip: Mac OS 9.1 Warnings
Before you upgrade to Mac OS 9.1, read these warnings.

Mac OS 9.1 has some useful new features, but some users shouldn't upgrade. Mac OS X Public Beta and Mac OS 9.1 are not compatible. If you install Mac OS 9.1, the Classic environment in the Mac OS X Public Beta will no longer function. (If you put OS X on a separate volume with its own version of OS 9, you should be okay.)

If you have a Power Mac 6100, 7100, or 8100, you will need a Mac OS 9.1 full install CD to upgrade to Mac OS 9.1, and not just the OS 9.1 update. Also, Mac OS 9.1 may not work with PCI DOS Compatibility cards and third-party processor accelerator cards.

For a complete list of compatibility issues go here.
