Chris's Highlighted Topic

How secure is your computer.  On Sunday’s show I will discuss some practical approaches you can take to secure your computer from unwanted visitors.  Think your computer is safe?  Take the Steve Gibson “Shields Up” challenge.  Go to www.grc.com and see if his automated system can “hack” you.

 In “Technology News”

…The military with tanks that can change color during times of battle?  How about tanks that can alert the crew when damaged?  To far fetched and out of this world, guess again, the DoD (Department of Defense) says the technology is ready to implement should we go to war with Iraq.  Listen in to learn about nanotechnology is going to work on the most lethal machines in the world, the “M-1 Abram”

…is Microsoft dominating world wide?  Well, perhaps, but not in this country.  This particular country is doing everything it can to keep Microsoft out, and is succeeding.  Learn about a little place where the “Penguins” rule and “Windows” drools.

…MP3 rippers have met their match.  As you read this the music industry is releasing a new CD format.  What’s the difference?  Better music quality?  So they claim, but better than that, a new encoding system that doesn’t allow you to convert it to MP3 format.  Who’s paying the bill for this?  You are.  Listen in to find out why.

All The Cool Stuff

Also on the show:  Linux and windows at the same time, you bet.  I’ll tell you how.  Looking for a new game to entertain you this coming week?  I got one for you, and interesting web sites straight from the people that have way too much time on their hands.  All this and more on the “On Computers Radio Show” Sundays from 9-12 AST.

The USBDrive is an exciting advancement in the personal data storage market. Due to its tiny size, large capacities, and use of the USB standard, the USBDrive revolutionizes the way people deal with large volumes of data.

The device is roughly the size of a car key and allows the user to transport their digital assets both securely and quickly. A computer user no longer needs to be challenged by lengthy installs, slow transfer speeds, or compatibility issues. With the USBDrive, a user can quickly synchronize vital personal files between computers at work, home, or school without hassle.

The new, driverless USBDrive requires no software or drivers to operate. Because it utilizes the USB Mass Storage Compliance, the new device is simply plug-and-play on Windows XP, Me, 2000, Mac OS 9-10X and Linux 2.4.17. The new device will also operate on Win98SE, but because this OS does not fully support the USB Mass Storage compliance, the one-time installation of a driver is required.

Deepak found something in Macromedia Flash 6 you all should know about. There is a setting that by Default the web site can "Allow the web site to access your microphone and camera." you should turn it off.

Cloning a Hard Disk

If you need to transfer an entire hard disk to another hard disk, you can use one of several commercial programs to do the job. However, if this isn't something you do often, you might want to go for a freeware solution.

One excellent freeware disk cloner is DrvClonerXP. This program is designed specifically for Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Make sure you read all the information before you run DrvClonerXP. Note that you will lose any existing data on the target drive. The entire drive will become a clone of the source drive.

You can download a copy of DrvClonerXP by clicking here.

Reloading Pages in Netscape 6

Suppose a web page appears to hang up. Just click Stop and then click Reload. This will often open the page for you.

If you click Stop and Reload and you still have a problem, click Stop, then hold down the Shift key and click Reload. This causes Netscape 6 to reload from the original site rather than from the cache files on your computer or the cache files of a proxy.

JPEG Thumbnail Maker

A good thumbnail maker is an excellent addition to anyone's freeware collection. Oscar's JPEG Thumb-Maker is one that we've been using for only a short time. However, in this short time, it has become the only one we use.

Give Oscar's JPEG Thumb-Maker a try. You'll find it by clicking here.

Deciding on a Motherboard

If you usually build your own computers, or if you're thinking of building a computer, you'll need to be very careful about selecting the right motherboard. The motherboard is the heart of the computer, so you want to make sure you select one that offers everything you need with an eye on the future as well.

A good place to start researching motherboards is MotherBoards.org. Just navigate to their site by clicking here.

Starting Netscape 6 your Way

If you'd like your Netscape 6 to always start with the same size window, you can add the instructions to your Netscape shortcut. To do this, right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. When the dialog box opens, click the Shortcut tab. Now, click in the Target entry box and then press End. Press the Spacebar and enter (at the end of the existing line)

-height xxx -width yyy

where xxx and yyy are the height and width in pixels. Click OK to close the dialog box and save your settings.

When you click the shortcut to run Netscape, the window will open to the selected size.

Note that clicking Maximize will override your size specifications.

FreeSnap

If you've ever wanted to size a window so the edges just touch the sides or the top and bottom of the screen, you know that this is often a difficult task. So, why not use some software to help size windows? And, if the software is free, so much the better.

We suggest that you try FreeSnap from Blue Onion Software. You'll find this program by clicking here.
