Letter-writing campaign
Last week Deepak encouraged a letter-writing campaign addressed to the bankruptcy court and representatives in Congress in order to keep the Ricochet system intact. Metricom's manner of presenting Ricochet for sale under bankruptcy has been less than successful. Our campaign is to request that the Debtor in Possession status needs to be removed. We wish to see that the system remains intact for a reasonable period of time. If you would like to help save the Ricochet technology by sending a letter to the Judge and your congressman asking for the

Brandon Guthrie, Senior Technical Analyst at Crucial Technology
Responsibilities As senior technical analyst, Brandon Guthrie maintains the data in Crucial's Memory Selector, the massive database which allows Crucial to match memory upgrades with virtually every computer system or motherboard made. He works closely with every department in the company providing training for employees, modifying the Memory Selector to better meet each departments needs, and assisting in the creation of Crucial's policies and procedures regarding technical issues. In addition, Brandon uses his substantial computer expertise to answer some of the trickiest questions asked of the technical support department.
Background Before joining Crucial, Brandon was the lead computer electrician at a local electronics store. He studied computer information systems at the University of Arizona and Boise State University.
In his own words "I love the interaction I get from working with every department we have and getting to train our employees to become the true Memory Experts. The constant change in products and technology, along with the drive to become better, keeps my job interesting and unique. We continue to innovate and improve the way we do business--you can't find that constant change at many workplaces outside of Crucial. The bottom line is: work at Crucial is fun, interesting, and challenging."

Checking Graphics Acceleration
To make sure your computer is using all of the Graphics Capabilities your hardware can provide, right-click your desktop and select Properties. Click the Settings tab and then the Advanced button. Select the Performance tab and move the slider all the way to the right. If your computer seems to slow down, move the slider to the left until things are acceptable. (You will need to reboot when you change this setting.)

Upgrading Modems
If you can, get DSL! DSL is so much faster than a regular modem. Just make sure that you buy the proper Internet security software to protect your system. You also should have a USB port on your computer, and some older PCs don't have them. If you must buy a new modem, buy the cheapest 56K PCI internal modem you can find. Again, if you can get DSL, go for it!

DirectX Upgrade
If you play a lot of games on your PC, chances are that your games use DirectX. If that's the case, you should always be using the latest version. Not doing so could cause your PC's performance to suffer. Look at www.microsoft.com/directx to make sure. One note: This is a big file!

Speed Up Your Ports
To speed up your ports, first go to the Control Panel and select the System icon. Then, select the Device Manager tab and choose Ports. Right-click the Modem's Port and make sure that the following settings exist (make a note of what they currently are, so if problems arise, you can easily put them back): Click Port Settings and make sure that the Bits Per Second is as high as possible. Then make sure Flow Control is set for Hardware. Click Advanced and make sure the FIFO buffer is checked. Also make sure the Receive and Transmit buffers are as high as possible. Note: Windows Me uses a dropdown list and other versions use a slider control.
