Guest for
Today
Dr. Akhtar A. Badshah and Gene Zeigler
Akhtar Badshah (click here for his bio) is Executive Director of Digital Partners. www.digitalpartners.org is actively engaged in tapping the entrepreneurial skills of those fortunate enough to be currently riding the waves of digital power. I see how joyfully techies, geeks, and nerds share knowledge in chat rooms and newsgroups. I see how freely help is given. People helping people seems to be human nature. The computer age has brought about a closeness never before experienced. What would it be like if this unique virtual fellowship were available even to third world countries? What if this could be aided and abetted by a sort of "digital peace corps?" Listen and learn how Digital Partners has started this process and how you can be a part of it. Digital Partners has the framework, organization, knowledge, backing, and especially the dedicated desire to make it happen. They are well-started on this task. The task is to take the underprivileged from an agrarian age, skipping over the industrial age, to the IT (information technology) age. Think of the beneficial effects on the environment alone!

AlaskaJoe's Tips
Rebuild Your Icons
It can be annoying, and disconcerting, when
icons on your desktop begin looking "odd." They may have odd images, or simply
disappear and have the Windows standard "I do not know what this is" icon.
Sometimes, the Windows icon file becomes corrupt and needs refreshing. One way
to do this is to delete the icon's cache file. Find the file called
ShellIconCache in the \Windows folder. This file may have the "Hidden" attribute
turned on, meaning DOS will not allow you to see the file. Within Explorer,
right-click the ShellIconCache file and select Properties. Uncheck the "Hidden"
box. Open a DOS session. Go to the file location of ShellIconCache from within
DOS. Now you will be able to see Shelli~1 from within DOS (the DOS naming
convention for ShellIconCache). Delete the Shell~1 from within DOS, then exit
DOS. Restart Windows and the cache file will be rebuilt with all new icons.

Taskbar On Desktop
The taskbar can be very useful to navigate
around your different applications, but if you do not want to see the taskbar,
it can become a nuisance. This is especially true if you hide your taskbar and
it continually blanks the bottom section, then Windows must take time to rebuild
this portion of the screen when the taskbar vanishes again.
You can control this by making your taskbar only visible
while on the desktop. Right-click a blank spot on your
taskbar and click Properties. Now, inspect the '-Always On
Top option and make sure that it is unchecked. Click Apply.

Time And Date
You can change the Time and Date of Windows
within DOS by
using the TIME and DATE commands rather than using the
taskbar. Open a DOS session and type either DATE or TIME. A
message will pop up with the current date or time. Simply follow the
format given and change the time, or just hit Enter to keep the
current values.

Clear Out The 'Recent' Folder
In Notepad, create a file called DelRcnt.bat
and have the following line as the only entry on the file:
Del \windows\recent\*.*
Save the file and, using Explorer, create a shortcut to the file. Now, whenever
you want to run the new file, simply double click the icon and your recent file
will be cleared!
